How to check your business details on Google

If your phone number or address is different on Google, your website and Yell, customers ring the wrong number and search engines are less sure which details to trust. Checking takes about fifteen minutes.

Why matching details matter

Search engines and AI assistants piece together information about your business from many places. When your name, address and phone number are the same everywhere, they are more confident it is you, and customers get the right number. When they differ, people ring old numbers, turn up at old addresses or give up.

Step 1: write down your correct details

Decide on one exact version of your business name, address (or service area if you work from home) and main phone number. Use exactly that version everywhere, including small things like “Ltd” and how the address is written.

Step 2: check Google

  1. Search your business name and town on Google, and on Google Maps.
  2. Look at the listing on the right, or the map result: name, phone number, address or service area, website link and opening hours.
  3. If you have not claimed the listing, look for “Own this business?” or “Claim this business” and follow the steps. Google usually asks you to verify that you run the business.
  4. If you have claimed it, sign in to your Google Business Profile and correct anything that is wrong.

Step 3: check your own website

Your website should show the same name and phone number, usually in the header or footer and on your contact page. If you have several old numbers, pick one.

Step 4: check the main directories

Search your business name on each of these and check the details:

Update any that are wrong. If you find a duplicate listing for your business, most directories let you report it or ask for it to be merged.

Step 5: give it time

Some changes show straight away. Others, particularly on Google and the larger directories, can take days or a few weeks to appear. Check again after a fortnight.
